As I woke up this morning and glanced out the window at the results of a blizzard blowing through the night before, there was a sense of silent splendor in stepping out and viewing the beautiful white winter wonderland of everything coated in snow. There’s a certain silence and quiet beauty in fresh, untouched snow.
It reminded me of a poem I wrote entitled, “Silent Splendor,” which I actually wrote in the middle of summer with a breeze drifting in the window. The house was quiet … no one talking, no radio or TV on, and I just sat back appreciating the solitude. Like this morning’s silence with the snow, there was a pleasant silence in that summer breeze coming in the window.
I started to concentrate on what I could hear while that breeze was coming through the window … a dog barking far in the distance, the clock ticking the time away on the mantel, birds chirping in a nearby tree. I could even feel and hear the breeze coming in the window with occasional gusts.
It was pleasant and peaceful to sit in the silence and notice distant sounds other than the normal daily distractions of the TV, radio, phones, computers.
It is moments like that quiet summer breeze and this morning’s silent winter beauty that we can feel a closeness to God. God desires that we live peaceful and quiet lives in godliness and holiness. This is good and pleases God our Savior. (1 Timothy 2:2-3)
May we daily find a quiet moment, with no distractions, to appreciate and feel the silent splendor God desires for each of us!
