I posted yesterday on my Author’s Facebook Page about the devotional I read regarding wisdom. Wisdom is of such great value that it is worth our taking time to think about it and to understand its importance. Proverbs 3:14 indicates that wisdom is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold.
We’ve all felt that pressure of making wise decisions, and sometimes it can cause worry and anxiety when we’ve made the wrong decision, or uncertainty when we’ve made the right. Really, wisdom is in play with every decision we make … from spending money, buying homes and cars, life-style changes, job changes, religion, retirement, relationships, marriage, divorce, etc. We make decisions every day throughout the day.
I learned at a young age the importance of wisdom in making decisions. I could list several here (and may blog on those at another time) but I will always remember one that sticks out in my mind. The family was was out shopping and my dad was driving. There was what looked like a brown sack in the road up ahead. I heard Mom tell Dad to be careful as it could be a rock. Dad said “no, he was pretty sure it was a brown bag” and proceeded to run over it. Needless to say, we had to pull into a service station to have the oil pan fixed. I get a good laugh over it now! But, at the time, us kids didn’t know whether to laugh or cry (we decided to be silent). As you can guess, Mom was pretty upset that Dad hadn’t listened to her.
There are, of course, decisions that we daily make that are obviously much worse and unwise. Sometimes it seems better to avoid something than to have to pay the consequences of a bad decision, but we cannot go through life avoiding decisions because of the unknown consequences. That’s why it is important to continually seeks God’s guidance and wisdom.
In 2 Chronicles 1, God appears to Solomon (King David’s Son, who became the wisest King of all time) and said to him to ask for whatever he wanted God to give to him. Solomon asked for wisdom and knowledge. God said to Solomon that since he hadn’t asked for wealth, possessions or honor, nor the death of his enemies or longer life … God not only granted Solomon with wisdom and knowledge, He gave him wealth, possessions, and honor as well.
This is a lesson in the need to think carefully in what we ask God for. God truly does hear our pleas, our requests, our deep-felt prayers. He knows the desires of our hearts. He knows the necessity of wise choices in our daily living. He also knows we are human and don’t always know what the wisest decisions are at times. God desires for us to continually seek wisdom and understanding.
We can find guidance and wisdom in reading the Bible. There is much in the Bible regarding wisdom. It is mentioned approximately 219 times. It is worth our time to seek what Scripture has to say in this regard.
“Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding…” Proverbs 3:13
