Christmas is always such a special time of year. Beautiful decorated trees, lights, garland, tinsel. Then, of course, there is the mistletoe, presents, Christmas Cards. And we cannot forget baking Christmas Cookies and spending time with family and friends. Along with that special feeling of giving, sharing, and love. Most importantly, it is a time to celebrate Jesus and His birth. The “reason” for the season … coming to earth for the sole purpose of dying on the cross to save us from our sin.
Then January rolls around. Time to stash away all the Christmas decorations. I don’t know about you, but the house seems dreary in comparison. There’s a certain feeling of being let down. Unquestionably, a sense of dreariness once the decorations are all stored away.
Recently, I read a devotion where a gentleman wrote that his family mentions this dreariness. He reminds his family that it’s a time to remember being “one day closer” to what the true meaning of Christmas represents. It’s the joy of knowing we will one day be living in eternity with our Lord and Savior. Moreover, it’s celebrating His coming to earth to redeem us with His very life. He came to lead us on the only true path to our future life in eternity with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Each day that passes here on earth brings us one day closer to Them.
Without a doubt, after reading that devotion, I was inspired to write the poem, “One Day Closer.” I realized the importance of our daily steps that bring us closer to our future life with the Holy Trinity for all eternity. Especially knowing our life is short here on earth and eternity is forever. I realized it’s important to know and trust that God is walking each step with us throughout our life and leading us closer to being with Him.
Undoubtedly, no matter the circumstances, good or bad, throughout our life we can daily remind ourselves of God’s goodness, mercy, grace, forgiveness, and love that He has for each of us; and that we know and can say to ourselves each day … “One Day Closer!”
