I recently had a line running through my head….”A River Runs Deep.” I jotted it down and pondered the meaning for awhile. I felt God wanted me to write about the Holy Spirit within us, and that the Holy Spirit IS that River. I then wrote the above poem, “A River Runs Deep.”
Living Water is what Jesus offered to the Samaritan Woman at the well. When Jesus asked her for a drink, the Samaritan Woman said to him: “’You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?’ (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, ‘If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.’ ‘Sir,’ the woman said, ‘you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water?’ ….Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’” (John 4:10-14)
As humans, we seek peace in our hurry-up, do-it-now, world! A peace that overrides the worries, anxieties, pressures, concerns, and sorrows we all face. The living water Jesus offers gives us that peace. You know, that moment of contentment when it’s quiet and you feel all is well with the world – even when a thousand things are going on at once and it may seem nothing is going right, but you still feel a sense of peace. I believe it is the living water that Jesus offers that gives us that peace and contentment.
We all want and seek “peace.” We want that river that runs deep and never ends. We want that river that cleanses, discerns, and communicates. As Christians, we want the Holy Spirit to lead, guide, help, comfort, and counsel.
May we always appreciate and rely on that river knowing always that it is the Holy Spirit that flows within us with the love of our dear Lord and Savior, and truly is the only place where true peace will be found!
